I served. There were no wars or "police actions" going on at the time (aside from that whole "mutual assured destruction" thing) and although student loan debt didn't dog you for the rest of your life in those days, college was still far from free; I had to pay for it somehow. I sometimes wonder if what I did was "less than" because I never had to go anywhere dangerous and fight.
