As I understand it, that song was performed by David Seville (voices) and Canned Heat (music). It was released on Canned Heat's 1968 album Boogie with Canned Heat.

    Here's the Wiki article... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boogie_with_Canned_Heat

Now you have me wondering what is the truth behind who performed/should get credit on this (even kept me up last night). Unfortunately I have to run out for the better part of the day (and maybe through Saturday). I'll do some research and see that really transpired. You may be right - and I'll be happy to correct any mistakes - with any due apologies!

Two recordings. One, the original, in 1958, the Canned Heat version in 1968. We (MMA) seem to have and aggregate page for the song, when there really should be two separate pages. This is much more than say live and studio recordings.

Original is not just sped up voice, it is sped up voices. Each character does have a separate voice and within the first 30 seconds of the song you recognize them as unique (with one unique troublemaker/rebel). This attention on the original is why imitators that just don't get it have not been heard from (like say, The Spice Mice).

Alvin & The Chipmunks did not do the original Witch Doctor by Ross Bagdasarian (David Seville). Ross did that earlier as it's own separate project. It sold well and did give Ross the idea to use the speed-up effect with 3 unique characters--The Chipmunks. Ross did later use The Chipmunks to record a new version of Witch Doctor sometime later (where here on TMMA we should also have separate song pages for each version).

Canned Heat's is a cover, and not the one that got the votes for the DT20.

In 1958, when the original version was released, Canned Heat was not even a band yet (they formed in 1965)

I credited it as "Alvin & the Chipmunks" because that is the current name for the act according to the official website. (at the time of 1958 release, it was simply "The Chipmunks")

The only times where I don't update an act's name are in cases like Mark Jonathan Davis' earlier stuff (like "Star Wars Cantina"). I don't credit those as "Richard Cheese" because Cheese is a totally different character and style from Davis' earlier work.

    My apologies!

Yes, DJP is right. The original David Seville version was the one played and voted for. I have also gone back over every play and properly attributed each entry - and created a separate page for the Canned Heat version.

    Thanks for your help everyone!

How do we know if the Canned Heat version didn't have a song page?

I remember seeing it, but now only this one www.themadmusicarchive.com/song_details.aspx?SongID=32223 remains. The separate page just created, I presume.

Because the page for the original does not mention Canned Heat. :)

This was due to my error (assumption) - and DJ called me on it. She was right, the new page was added and now we're more accurate than before.

That is how this site is supposed to work - we work *together* to improve accuracy - and therefore better inform the general public. I want this site to be the top source for accurate dementia information, and you all are helping in that effort!

Thanks again to all - one problem down - I'm sure there's more so keep up the good work!

I'm sorry, I don't mean to pick on you, but so far "Atari" spent 20 weeks on the MMDT20 this year which makes it the song that spent the most weeks on the chart this year at this point.

Also, Arnie Aardvark is one of the many psedonyms of dementia artist and frequent Forum poster Eric Brown. His website is www.nworbcire.com/knowtalent.htm and has several songs for download.
