Topic: * Even More Asphalt Aardvarks and Silly Questions

Started by: Stavro Arrgolus

And now, a silly question about the recent HTTPS security update for the site. We used to have this before the last site upgrade, but we lost it when the upgrade was completed. Now, we have it again - but...

I'd like as many of you as possible to post here whether those of you who use the restored version of the site with the HTTPS (hopefully, that's everyone - your login isn't secure unless you use it) in the URL notice that the homepage isn't secure.

This is partly due to the MadMusic radio link, which still uses HTTP and didn't update with the rest of the features. The question is:

Can you see the radio player's Halloween banner w/ the HTTPS URL?

Or do you only see an empty white box?

There, Wayne sorted that out & linked the 24/7 stream banners to the playlists so they'll change with the seasons/holidays. Now all we need (aside from more stream banners) is people to actually listen to the stream.

I actually asked Wayne if there was a stream log recording haw many listeners hear the stream and it turned out there were only three - and I was one of them.

"I think we can do better than that!"

Now that this is fixed, maybe now I can finally get some Halloween shows made. It might be a good idea to make a podcast first. More show exposure with iTunes and all that. I actually read some good reviews about it, so...

It seems Young Stavro's long, car related nightmare is over for another year since he passed the car inspection this time. New plates, renewed license - the works. He actually says he feels good about having it over with. It's a bit disturbing as the old bastard never feels good about anything.

Therefore, the Halloween shows are back on. He seems fixated on making MMS-157 after 6 years or whatever and is determined to make that one first. So if you see a show on the homepage that says it's from 2012 or thereabouts, that's the reason.

Notso much the car inspectors as it's the registry that sets the standard. Cameras in the bay now and the registry can watch live and has all inspections on video. Inspectors can get fined and lose their drivers license as well. Welcome to Massachusetts!

Young Stavro wouldn't impose on Dave.

I'm told the only thing the old man needs is that overpriced idiotic inspection sticker, then this problem goes away for another year and the Halloween shows are on again.

Simplicity itself...seen here on the screen. In reality, it involves nightmarish dealings with unscrupulous car inspectors looking to make a few extra bucks.

Solution: difficulty level 6. "Go to a less corrupt inspection station." Sounds easy, right? Not in Massachusetts. Nothing's easy here.

Alexei Sayle once said, "Can people actually live on Jupiter? The answer is yes. In fact, it's easier to live on Jupiter than it is to live on an old age pension."

I'm sure to Stavro, truer words were never said. When you pass 70, these bastards see you as an easy target no matter how large and fit you actually are. What the living must endure...

Privyet. Are you tired of no new Mad Music Shows and/or what the hell is going on around here generally? I've a new blog post that endeavors to explain the whole mess.

It's far from entirely coherent and...all just a bit silly, but I think I cover most of the bases. Have a look at it if you want. www.madmusic.com/readblog.aspx?id=6932

Fun Fact Best Guess: How do you suppose the "Most Popular Songs This Week" get chosen?

Are they actually popular? Oh, hell, no! One of the things that 11 years of editing this site has taught me is to observe everything. Too much around here doesn't make sense, but if you watch it for a while, you can snag a few clues to the other kind of madness on the site - how the hell things work...or don't.

As many of you have figured out already, I imagine, the 'popular songs' are chosen, for the most part, entirely randomly by search bots. They're hunting for popular words or names, not songs. This is why nearly all the 'popular' songs have pages that are partially/completely filled out.

At this moment (4:30 am, July 4), the bots have hit on names & words like "Billy Joel", "Trondheim", "Radiation", "Airlines" and "Batman". And that's just for starters. All appear on the homepage list right now.

It's more than likely these were chosen based on what the bots were searching for. Ex: When Bob Dorough died recently, his song, "Blue Christmas (To Whom It May Concern)" got on the chart and remained there. But not just because of him. Miles Davis is also credited for the song and the bots seek his name out as well. The 2 together are what caused the song's "popularity".

Dorough has other songs in the archive, but they never make the list. Why? No Miles Davis for the bots to find. This sort of thing goes on all the time.

Just a random 4:30 am thought from a chronic insomniac.

This is how I sorted that out in FF. I have ABP, NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere - and those are just the big ones. I unblocked the homepage - and just the homepage - in AdBlock Plus. NoScript still tenaciously blocks every ad. If you use both, you can try that.

Not that we encourage that sort of thing. The ads pay for the site's upkeep after all. but things aren't the same as when they were first added to the site. Even Google's ads can contain malware these days. Just allowing them to appear....well, it bothers me.

I still insist on using Winamp, though that may have to change eventually. VLC would be my next choice.

The shows have to be heard with the site player or the last few minutes of every segment get inexplicably chopped off. I compensate on the shows by adding a bonus track after the show ends so the legal bits said at the end are still heard.

Dave AuJus:

Thank you for asking.

No I don't listen to it regularly. My ad blocker won't show it.

I used to use "Winamp" on my old computer. I have no idea what this computer would need to play it.

It's easier for me to just listen to one of the shows with the site's built-in player.

Do you listen to the 24/7 stream on the homepage?

If so, what player do you use? VLC, Winamp, WMP, QuickTime? Something else?

Now that the medical malarkey is over for the foreseeable future, I can get on with making shows that were completed months ago - once the "Epic Spring Cleaning" is done.

But that's not what this post is about...

I've a silly question...which is what this thread is supposed to be about. Though it rarely is.

Do you listen to the 24/7 stream on the homepage?

It was down for a short time until yesterday & I've gotten no complaints. Does anyone remain who listens to it regularly - either now or during the holidays? I've some ideas for it and need to know, so tell me now...although no response at all will also tell me.

If so, what player do you use? VLC, Winamp, WMP, QuickTime? Something else?

The next show is MMP-51 - it was complete, but it's closing on a year old. Fine for an MMS, but not for a podcast. It needed reworking/updating. I still question whether letting the 'Celestra Arrgula' vampire' character host since Audacity did a little too good of a job making the voice sound realistic.

Such a show would be "very silly...and a bit suspect". And I'm still zonked out from all that shoveling. This is why any new show is taking so long.

But I have to sit through another holiday, so I've got another day to rework it. It won't be too much longer.

Always gratified to hear someone likes the show. Instead of just announcing this or that (I got bored with that rather quickly), it's meant to come at you from a perspective - albeit a rather snarky & twisted one.

The 'vampires' are there to oppose this perspective, making the shows even weirder.

I didn't mention Hillary in any show not because of anything political (I've no political affiliation - I voted for Nixon & Reagan, but also for Bill Clinton & Obama), but because she has the charisma of a potted plant. And skewering that would just have been no fun.

Most of what I use comes from Wayne's collection here, the Dr. D tapes I made decades ago, The FuMP, or elsewhere on the net. JFGI and it all appears. Just be careful with some of those sites...

If it blew goats I wouldn't be here. But to be honest, your show is the only show I listen too here.

No offence to A-Log, DJ Darren etc. But your snarky sarcastic nature is hilarious. And the way you poke fun at the rest of the world is entertaining (Although personally, I harass Hilary as much as Trump. That is one reason I stay away from sites like TheFUMP. Whether you choose to get kicked in the left testicle or the right testicle.. you are still the one getting kicked.).

How 'unprofessional' they are doesn't matter.. it's like the MST3k of the internet.

The vampire is entertaining.

My only wish (however unlikely) would be a way to add some of the weird stuff you play to my own collection. I tried to search for some of this stuff but have NO IDEA how you found some of it!

Keep up the good work

#3 it is, then. I'm just gratified that someone listens to these shows. With few participants now to provide feedback, one wonders whether anyone does.

I'm confident that every showmaker would want comments about their new show- even if only to confirm it's being heard.

Tell me you liked it or that it blows goats. Tell me if you like the silly 'vampire' guest host voices I use to break up the monotony of the shows. Are they badly made? (actually, I know they are already, but suggestions to improve them would be nice)

Are my heavily scripted shows better than the ones I made years ago or does it not make any difference to you. That sort of thing.

I actually had to go through the forum & hunt down the last thread for a pre-holiday show. That turned out to be the podcast "People Die If They Are Killed" - from 10 months ago. I've got a completed playlist for it around here somewhere. I have to hunt that down as well.

So let's review... The new show will be that podcast. It will be designated MMP-51 and will be made after I shovel the foot of rock hard snow around my car and go out & pay my house tax bill. If the car starts after weeks of sub-zero weather. I'm not confident. It'll take days to recover from all that shoveling. The show will be recorded & posted after all that.

I don't control the banner. At least not for now.

It's now too late to make a New Year's show. Those shows don't have many views/listens. The one's that do are the H'ween/Xmas shows. After shoveling the foot of show out of my driveway & taking a few days to recover from that, I'll be presented with 3 options:

Complete the final Halloween show with only one segment in it.

Record the final Xmas show & backdate it to Xmas Day.

Or make one of the many Mad Music Hours with themes and threads already decided.

Who would like to hear what?

The mad music radio Christmas banner is still up. Also tommorow you should make the new Year's show.

Stavro Arrgolus:

We didn't wait to add the banner to the homepage promo article.

It was completed last night thanks to Dave AuJus herculean effort in dealing with the broken internal MadSpace folder system. There are no page turning links in their folders anymore, so only page 1 is viewable, making everything beyond inaccessible. I knew this, but didn't think it'd become part of the problem here. In the end, he just e-mailed me the completed banner and that worked.

The upshot of all this is that the new promo article is as complete as it's going to be for now - until we work out how to add HTML5 video to it, that is. Meanwhile, we have an excellent focal point for it. I hope new visitors to the site like it & ultimately decide to join.

Just don't zoom the page beyond 110% or it'll suddenly be empty at the top. The banner & article will have moved below the 2 columns on each side. I can't center the banner, either. That bit requires repair as well.

The stream IS back to the top 1000. I switched it out several days ago. I say so in this thread. If you're still getting Xmas music from it, tell me now. Wayne has to switch out the banners for the stream. He never connected them so they'd auto-switch like the homepage show banners do.

I've mailed him about this, but he has an actual job, i.e., he's not retired like me and just doesn't have the time, so I never get a response.

Just as importantly, I can't make so much as a simple unembellished podcast right now as I have the flu - the first time in nearly 20 years I've actually been sick with something. My health is crap & I've had numerous hospitalizations (especially last year), but I seemingly never catch colds, have allergies or any of the nuisance illnesses one usually gets.

Health = crap. Sick = never. Go figure.

The New Year article is Wayne's bailiwick. It's where he announces the site's anniversary and expresses his sentiments about the coming year. I don't mess with that. I DO have a new article that promotes the site & its features, but it's not complete, because...flu.

I'm going to have to take down Ben's show article soon, so we're going to need more homepage content. And the mp3 store will have to be removed - something else I can't do as it's (quite properly) a 'site owner' function.

e8-deleted-   Offline  -  Suspended  -  01-05-18 11:35 AM  -  6 years ago
Stavro you better switch the Christmas music for the generic music, create a page for 2018, and make that New Year's podcast.
Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  12-09-17 08:09 PM  -  6 years ago

Ok, I just woke up & saw it again, so I'll type this out before I forget to for the umpteenth time.

See all those blank banner boxes in the 'new shows' box on the homepage? They're there because you have to add the banners manually now when you post a new show.

For DJs (and admins), there's an 'edit' link in the wide gold bar on top of the playlist. Hit that & there are currently 4 pages of banners to pick your show's out of. This allows you to change/update banners if you want. If you'd like a seasonal banner for your show, you have the option now.

And yes, I know this is my doing. I asked Wayne to create an option to change banners when he or Dave makes a show or to be able to choose between the 3 kinds of Mad Music Shows being posted - the podcast has its own banner to begin with.

Even though this feature was made to clear up show defining problems with TMMS, you can now make new banners for your shows if you want to, so it's not all bad.

"We Apologize For The Inconvenience."

Ack! More Monty Python references!...

Fixed. When I added this custom font-face feature I copied and pasted some code that was clobbering your edits. It's saving the changes now.

---
Stavro Arrgolus:

What I can't fix is the custom content box on the show pages. They're unalterable after saving. I forgot to add a sentence to the beginning of the latest show's description. It was supposed to be 'Tyro' providing the show promo at page top and I forgot to add this little detail.

Captain Wayne   Offline  -  Site Owner  -  11-10-17 11:29 AM  -  6 years ago
I've re-enabled the who's online trimming (only shows who has been on in the last hour). I think the database issue has now been fixed.
Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  11-10-17 11:12 AM  -  6 years ago

Looking for them down there is a vague memory, anyway. I seem to have more & more of those. I wasn't done with that article. And spell check doesn't work when you forget to add words entirely. I'm getting on with fixing that. There. That's better now.

What I can't fix is the custom content box on the show pages. They're unalterable after saving. I forgot to add a sentence to the beginning of the latest show's description. It was supposed to be 'Tyro' providing the show promo at page top and I forgot to add this little detail.

That's part of the gimmick. The 'vampire' characters are all critical of 'Uncle Stavro's' show style and I'm annoyed they leave corpses & body parts everywhere when they host/take over the show, but only Tyro (who's 51 - the others all call me 'young Stavro') complains about my NSFW show policy. There's psychological significance in that somewhere... But when it's Halloween, if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.

Captain Wayne   Offline  -  Site Owner  -  11-10-17 10:41 AM  -  6 years ago

Actually, they were both there as #8 and #9. I deleted the duplicate.

Tell me about it! I was only 42 when I started TheDoctorDementoShow.com - now I'm 55 and have so little  energy compared to back then. I feel for you dude, I can't image what it'll be like when I'm 17 years older than now!

Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  11-10-17 10:36 AM  -  6 years ago
Ok, that's my fault. I didn't check the sequence number for the article position. It's on the top of the edit box for a reason...but I swear I actually did look for it down there - the first time it got erased, the second, not so much. It seems Alzheimer's Disease is becoming a greater possibility now...I'll be 72 next month. Best not to think about it. I was 59 when I joined the site. There's a BIG difference between 59 & 72.
Captain Wayne   Offline  -  Site Owner  -  11-10-17 09:44 AM  -  6 years ago

Um, the articles didn't disappear, is was at the bottom of the page... you would have to scroll down to see it. You had it set for sequence #8 in the list (the default for new articles is the bottom of the page) so it was appended to the list of articles.  I changed the new post to be sequence #1 and now it's at the top.

Yes, the list of who's online is big... I dropped the routine that cleaned it up temporarily while we sort out an issue with the database server that is causing response timeouts and making the site look crashed. I think I have it fixed now, but have to monitor it to be sure. If all is well I reinstate the list trimming.

The Xmas banner is up, so it's time to get on with it. Wayne told me the situation. I completely get it. Unbelievable as it may sound, I once had a real job. (Nø, realli!)

The Big C & numerous deaths of relatives, among other things, railroaded my career and kept me from putting the money wasted in college to good use. Had I known all of that would happen, I'd have saved the cash & bought a house - one that's not falling apart.

Most of the big stuff has been dealt with. We can just work around the annoyances for now. Today, I'll post the Xmas promo on the homepage along with Dave's new banner, then I can continue assembling Xmas I. Right after breakfast.

            ________________________________________________________________________

Or not. I just wrote the homepage article with the banner, hit save and it vanished. It seems there's a lot more broken here than just the show page's custom content. The bug's in the whole posting program. That's got to be repaired and at the moment, it can't be. The article will just have to wait until time can be found to repair it. Meanwhile, I have shows to make.

Problem 2: Look at the counter in the top right below the donate link. There are not 21 online right now. The members online page isn't removing visitors when it refreshes. That number is just going to get more out of control. Possibly crashing the site. But I can't know that for sure.

Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  11-05-17 02:24 AM  -  6 years ago

Yes, that'll do nicely, thanks. When Wayne changes the banners out, this can go up with the article.

Now that I both have control of the streams and said control actually works, the possibilities are endless. There can potentially be a playlist with a banner for all occasions, holiday or not.

I can't bring myself to make them after the news story photo debacle a couple of years ago. I'm always concerned that the images are copyrighted. There are sites with free images somewhere, I know. I need only JFGI.

A new Xmas banner for the homepage would be greatly appreciated. The visual things always help with the active membership a bit and we might actually keep a few after the holidays this time. ...wishful thinking.

And for the sake of peace & quiet, I also think the season starts after Thanksgiving, but I don't have a great deal of say in the matter as many other music sites have their Xmas streams up already. Gotta keep up. Even now, the 'guests online' page has both users & bots hunting for Xmas songs.

We seem to be thinking the same thing. I used that medieval font in a different thread and thought how good it would look in the Xmas homepage promo article.

This PC is hopelessly unfixable. "Hammer Time" has arrived. 5 years isn't too bad for one of these things...

Time for another silly question - the reason I started these types of threads years ago.

I just switched out the 24/7 stream for the Xmas playlist and it seems to be working - though you never really know with all this. All I need is for Wayne to add the banner for it. Until then, the Halloween stream will play Xmas music. When that's done, I'll compose the Xmas promo article for the homepage.

The question is: When do YOU think the Xmas atmos should be established around here? Is it too early? Do you also object to Santa sticking his ass into the public consciousness right after Halloween? Has this whole 'Xmas season creep" thing gone too far?

Just wondering.

As we wrap up this Fancy Font Foray, you can now select your default font face and default font size for all text editor windows. If you go to your My Account page, you will see we added 2 new dropdowns where you can set your defaults. Of course, if you have any problems with the new stuff, let me know and I'll do my best to fix it in a timely fashion.

Right. Since I had no sleep at all last night, I've taken the proper overpriced pharmaceuticals and will go back to bed. Considering how many typing mistakes I'm making & correcting, I need the rest rather badly.

After that, I think I should crack open the PC & relieve the interior of dust bunnies with a Dustbuster & compressed air. It's been quite a while since it was last cleaned. Oh, right...it's never been cleaned. In 4 years. That can't be good.

After that, it'll be time to finish the script for Halloween I and get on with the recording.

Stavro Arrgolus:

The IM is undergoing a bit of a renovation, I'm thinking. As you can see, we've got a few new fonts - easier for old guys like me to see, and also new & interesting styles. I think/hope the Im box will soon resemble the input box with all the options I'm using now. That's why it's down for a while, i would guess. Maybe...possibly.

OK you fixed this and I got your message, but now Instant Messenger is not working for me. I can't reply or generate a new message.

I found 4 friend requests from the same person. I declined 2 and accepted 2 now I have 2 of the same friend and it won't let me remove 1 of them.

Captain Wayne:

It might have been a glitch, you can try to accept it, but it might say you are already friends.

One weird thing about the friend request is that I got one twice for the same person. Possible glitch? Accepted the first one but not sure about the other.

I suppose it's entirely coincidental that the last post to this thread 8 months ago was about the broken friending system.

It's been fixed now, so go ahead and friend like crazy if you want.

You and I are already friends - so I didn't send the request to you.

Yes Wayne has family stuff to take care of.

No message; no notification - but then you're already on my rather large list. Before, you'd get a message saying that 'whoever' was already friended. Not this time.

The broken function must happen to those who aren't on the friend list already. I forget if I sent Wayne a mail about it. He might still be dealing with other things.

I just received notice that a "Friend Request" was made but I have no message or button on My MadSpace page to accept the request. Also got the same notice in my email. So I can not accept a request if I don't actually get it. I sent a "Friend Request" from my side, maybe they can accept it.

The 'no blog notification' thing used to happen to me as well. It's also part of a larger old bug.

I'll admit I didn't test the friend request system along with the other functions. We had to see that all the basic functions were working first & the plan was to expand the testing out from there.

None of this can be sorted out until he returns. I should direct him to this thread to get the fixing started again.

While we are about fixing things, It seems like I am not being notified when Halfbee posts in his blog but I do get notified when a new forum post happens. Also the "Friends Request" function is not working right because I get no notice that someone tried to friend me. I just found an old expired request in my e-mail that I only check about once a month. (No I did not ignore your friend request, I never got it in time)

It's ok. I only knew it because it happened before. The duplicate post thing is an older bug that we missed when debugging the new site - or was reproduced somehow. This was one of the remaining bugs I mentioned elsewhere.

Wayne has to fix this when he returns, so I'll type this out here so I'll have a chance to remember to remind him when he does.

Thanks for knowing more about these things than I do. I think I'll just go to my room and suck on my foot. I really thought it was a display problem.

Ok, let's move the issue here. The FuMP 35 album is fixed, but the comments on the page get duplicated and now I can't add them at all.

What I was trying to get out was that Art Paul may have added his video to both the song page and the video page. This is bad and will screw up albums and such like the one I just fixed. I deleted the video page's version since the video will go there anyway as it's on his song page.

If the problem happens again, remember - delete the video page video and not the song page one.

Thanks Stavro,

Ok.  When I click it, I get nothing but an empty page. So it's an admin function that I don't have access to.  Just like that thing where I couldn't post shows to i-tunes. Any way the other functions that I do have access to let me help you and Wayne with making shows, uploading mp3s, editing artist, song and album data. I'm happy to be able to help out with the access that I do have.

It's an admin function. The admin menu link is on the far right of the main toolbar and it sorts out more or less all the things I complained for years I couldn't do on the site  - so yay for HTML5.

It's always been a sort of DIY function for making scripts that Wayne made for his own use that I gradually took over. First, I made scripts for him, then in the Fall of 2012 I started making them for myself.

There's a small box on the page where you enter the show's SongIDs and it spits out all the songs' info below it. You copy & paste that on a Word document and presto - instant script.

You still have to add show details to the script (titles, song breaks, bumpers, intro & outro spiels, etc.), but it's a handy tool to make scripts with. If you don't have it, I can make you one whenever you guest host.

So where is this magical the site's "show research" function ? Is there a secret button or menu someplace? How can I use it to make better shows?
Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  01-22-17 01:14 AM  -  7 years ago

I've used up the allotted 100 posts in the last one of these threads, so it's time to start a new one...

Here's the silly issue. It's about show embellishment.

I took over The Mad Music Show in late 2012 or so. When I started, there was little or no excess patter in the shows beyond reading what was written (mostly by me, but not always) about the songs. When I use the site's "show research" function, it can help build/organize a script, but it also adds the 'facts' from the song pages.

Wayne invariably made it this way so he'd have something to say about the songs when he was making shows.

I started out doing it this way as well...but as time went by, I got bored with the 'same old same old' and took to punching up the script with patter about the show's theme, the songs, the segments and before I knew it, there were silly 'vampire characters' guest hosting.

It now takes longer to make a show because I believe I have to come up with things for the script or it'll blow goats - and I just end up procrastinating. I've come to believe that I'm overthinking it too much now. Add crappy health to this scenario & it slows down show making quite a bit.

So here's the silly question.

Does it make a damn bit of difference? Are you ok with a show that's just songs & someone doing not much more than announcing what they were? I think the shows sound better if what's said is thought out & written down beforehand as I sure as hell can't remember these things when I'm recording shows. But that takes more time.

Which is better? A show with (hopefully) amusing patter between sets or do you just want to hear the songs with a minimum of patter?

I think I should try it both ways and see what the reaction is. If there is one...

Show 212 will be scripted as I've been doing as of late and show 213 (the all request show) will... not be.
