Here's my two cents on the subject. I don't feel that there has been a humorous real commercial that has been worthy of Dr. Demento's show since Stan Freberg died. As a deejay, I would not want to inflict real commercials on my audience. I would be afraid that all the bad non-funny real commercials would demand equal time.

Just My Humble Opinion,

Dave

Usually, no. Though they can be funny (good judgment is important with these), anything that tries to sell you something real turns the listener off unless it's really amusing. Also, try to avoid too much regionalism. The only reason I know what Knotts Berry Farm is was because I actually went there...in 1978.

Leave out the local oriented stuff unless a cow falls out of the air onto some guy dressed like Trump or something. Picture Dr. D. introducing it with just audio (like it'd be any other way). If it sounds out of place then, leave it out. If it's still funny, go for it.

Are "real" commercials allowed?

Stavro Arrgolus:

We have quite a lot of fake commercials in the archive and they get used on shows to break up song sets every now and again.

The rules for them are slightly different, but not much. This goes back to that whole 'comedy vs. novelty' thing again. A song can be either, but it has to be reasonably obvious that a fake commercial is meant as a joke because listeners hate commercials or anything that interrupts their entertainment - so yes, they have to be funny or at least obvious that they're fake.

SNL has lots of good fake commercials - 'Colon Blow' & that sort of thing. They count. And they don't have to be parodies. Often, the best ones are entirely original.

If it would surprise the listener on one of our shows & get a laugh, then it's all good.

The Elvira one I'd leave out as it's an actual commercial that wouldn't be obviously funny in audio only. Sometimes what's good visually doesn't work with just audio.

If it would surprise the listener on one of our shows & get a laugh, then it's all good.

What is the upload rule regarding commercials?

1) Can they be a real commercial as long its funny? (EX: Elvira's Mug Rootbeer Commerical www.youtube.com/watch?v=75cpvtrlWsM )

(Ex: Elvira's Knott's berry Farm intros/commericals www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGWUD7PRvkk )

2) Do they specifically have to be a commercial parody? (EX: a SNL Skit)
