Facts:
  • Popeye's creators chose spinach instead of, say, brussels sprouts or broccoli because of an 1870 German study that claimed spinach contained about as much iron as there is in red meat. In reality, this was nothing more than an accounting error. The scientists put the decimal point in the wrong place. The iron content of spinach is actually one-tenth of what was reported. The mistake was corrected in 1937. It was too late for Popeye, though. He’d already been using the spinach gimmick for almost 10 years. Spinach does contain iron, but no more than other leafy vegetables. In fact, the iron in spinach is not easily absorbed by the body unless it’s combined with an acid, such as a squirt of lemon juice. (spoken:)
    Oh, Olive Oyl, Olive Oyl!

    Here I am, Popeye!

Whar's me spinach? Whar's me spinach?

My, oh, my, Popeye! But you're eating too much spinach!

('Popeye' laugh) Well, blow me down!

Is that right, Popeye? Eat all the spinach to make those big muscles?

Nah! Taint so! I yam what I yam on accounta I eats me spinach!
    (laughs again)

    (song:)
Oh, I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
    I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
    I yam what's I yam
    and that's all what's I am
    I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

    Now, I'm one tough gazookus
    what hates all palookas
wot ain'ts on the ups and square
Boy, I biffs 'em and buffs 'em
    and always out roughs 'em
but none of 'em gets nowhere

Now, if anyone dares to risk my "fisk"
    It's "Boff" an' it's "Wham", un'erstan'?
    So keep "good be-hav-or"
    That's your one life saver
    with Popeye the Sailor Man

Oh, I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
    Popeye the Sailor Man
    Boy, I yam what's I yam
    and that's all what's I am
    I'm Popeye the Sailor Man

Oh, I'm Popeye the Sailor Man
    Popeye the Sailor Man
Boy, I'm strong to the "finich"
    'cause I eats me spinach
    I'm Popeye the Sayyyyyy-luuurrrr Mannnnnnn!
