Monty Python's Flying Circus Episode 15: The Spanish Inquisition
By: Monty Python
|
|
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our four...no... amongst our weapons.... amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise....Stavro Arrgolus

Some episodes are given unofficial names for the running gags in them. Cardinal Ximenez & Co. burst unexpectedly into enough rooms in this episode that everyone was expecting them at the end- which, as the gods of comedy dictate, is the one time they don't show up on cue. They were so popular, they appeared or were mentioned in other episodes and were added to Python albums until the Spanish Inquisition became signature Python characters. (Stavro Arrgolus) |
Castilian rules apply. In Europe, the "z" in "Ximenez" is pronounced "th". It's also assumed that since Biggles and Fang are named in the sketch, that Michael Palin's inquisitor is the Ximenez mentioned in the sketch's opening sequence, even though he's never called that in any of the shows or albums in which the character appears. None that I can remember, anyway. (Stavro Arrgolus) |
