Monty Python's Flying Circus Episode 18: Live From The Grill-O-Mat Snack Bar

This year our members have put more things on top of other things than ever before. But, I should warn you, this is no time for complacency. No, there are still many things, and I cannot emphasize this too strongly, not on top of other things. I myself, on my way here this evening, saw a thing that was not on top of another thing in any way. (shame!) Shame indeed but we must not allow ourselves to become too despondent. For, we must never forget that if there was not one thing that was not on top of another thing our society would be nothing more than a meaningless body of men that had gathered together for no good purpose.Stavro Arrgolus

Recorded September 10, 1970. Aired October 27, 1970.
The running gag in this show is that John Cleese, rather than sitting at a desk and saying 'And now for something completely different', introduces the sketches in the episode sitting at a table in a snack bar. Stavro Arrgolus

At the end of the episode, John Cleese goes on a bit about how his bits on the show weren't going over very well and that he might not be appearing in the next show (comically, of course). In another episode, he announces that he won't be appearing in it, though by making the announcement, he had already appeared. Some see these sequences as the foreshadowing of Cleese actually quitting at the end of series 3. (Stavro Arrgolus) |
