I've been on a quest! (No, I haven't been walking down the road one day, doo-dah doo-dah. And no, I don't have a little dog Toto either.) Perhaps we ought to start at the beginning...

*sets the Wayback Machine for August 1986*

A 15-yr-old girl in Los Angeles started listening to and taping bits from the Dr. Demento show, but only those that catch her attention and she likes. Unfortunately her record-keeping for the first 6 years was abysmal, until September of 1992. At this point she learned computers and created a database of the ongoing taping that took the paper lists and index cards to a new level, and even kept track of DATES things were taped on!

*fast-forward to late 1995 and beyond, she gets internet access!*

After scouring the web dry from then until now in attempts to correct all the errors, I still have like 25 things that are not properly identified. (The database has 2000 entries, so this is a mere bite-size chunk left!) This is why I have decided to call upon your vast collective knowledge to help me. (Though if complete LA playlists existed I would have had this finished ages ago. If I only had access to aural source material from this era I would be all over it banging those puppies out. Seriously, somebody hook me up... I wanna give back.)

There's 10 that should be easier, as I have the tapes. Then there's 2 where the tapes went AWOL, but I refuse to call them 'dead n gone' yet. The other 11 might be near impossible, as they are on my 'missing' list. Whoever is able to 'bring it' gets points. Though I don't really have anything in the way of prizes, the top-most point earners will be heralded as my Dementia Heroes, nay ROCKSTARS for-EVAH!!!

Score So Far
Tim P. Ryan - 6 points
Me - 8 points (As I've found some on my own lately...)

Here's parts 1, 2 & now part 3 (Politics) to test yer mettle! All titles are what I decided to call things at the time. More than likely they are wrong. Like, dead wrong.

Don't Have These At All Anymore

Freeway Combat
All I can remember is: (In a loud gruff voice) Freeway..... Freeway..... Freeway COMBAT!!!
Freeze-Dried Cat
Not sure if this was a song or a stand-up. Apparently about dead cats?
I Wanna Ride On The Popemobile OR just Popemobile
From web searches all I could find is that someone in AZ remembers this song too, but with no details.
Hello Mama, Hello Papa (taped ca 1989)
Parody of Allan Sherman's "Hello Muddah", starts with the words from the title and then goes: "Here I am in Nicaragua". Could this possibly be Nicaragua by Jose Gumbo?

(Most of this tape side was replaced with other material)
India - Duck's Breath Mystery Theatre
- Hunting Tigers Out In "Indiah" - The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
- The Sounds Of Sinus (1988 Version) - Mark Young
- The Galaxy Song - Monty Python
- No Smoking - Landry & Biener
- Hello Mama, Hello Papa
- Boogie In Your Butt - Eddie Murphy
- Midnight Star - 'Weird Al' Yankovic
- Write Romantically - Michael Longcor
- The Brady Bunch - 'Weird Al' Yankovic

You Check That Bag! (taped late 1989)
I'm kinda notorious for naming stand-up routines from either the first line spoken or some other line that jumps out at me. I believe the bit I took this title from was about airport security or something like that. Mind you, this was recorded/taped/lost LONG before 9-11.
***Breaking News -- This is Jerry Seinfeld from "Just For Laughs Festival". Also listed as Canadian Customs - Jerry Seinfeld"

(Half this tape side was replaced with other material)
Hot Rocks Polka - 'Weird Al' Yankovic

- It Only Makes Me Heave - Interlewd
- Missing, can't read what it once was
- Missing, can't read what it once was

My Mummy's In A Jam
Can't even remember what this sounded like, or any of the words. I'm guessing from a British performer?

The Moral Majority (taped ca mid-1988)
Was originally on the same tape with "Little Boy Squirrel". From searching this site there a couple possibilities.
The Moral Majority - Mayfield & Nissen/Electric Church
Moral Majority Top 40 - Deloy Parks
I'd have to hear 'em to make the call. I gave it a subject of 'Censorship', so I'm leaning towards 'Top 40'.

(Most of this tape side was replaced with other material)
Squirrel Nuts - Stuart Paul
My Father's Top Drawer - Peter Alsop
Three Mile Island - Pinkard & Bowden
- The Hostility Rag - Jack E. Leonard
- Tie Me Surfer Board Down, Sport - The Travellers

- Chucky
- Frosty The Dope Man - Mark Zydiak
- All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth - Spike Jones & His City Slickers

The Tapes With These Items Have Run Away

Little Boy Squirrel (taped ca mid-1988)
Story of the titled rodent courting and marrying his "little squirrel girl", I can almost hear it in my mind still. A children's song?
(See "Moral Majority" above for placement)

FOUND IT!! -- Squirrel Nuts -- Stuart Paul

Hungover (taped ca January 1988)
Can't remember if it was song or spoken, just can't find that blasted tape! I know it's NOT Hangover by Krypton, as I have that on another tape. And it's not Hungover by Joe Sarcasm either. Wow, now I'm really stumped.

FOUND IT!! -- Hungover -- Deuce Spriggins

Christmas Cut-Up (1985) - Whimsical Will
Last Will And Temperament - The Frantics
Ti Kwan Leep/Boot To The Head - The Frantics
Happy New Year - Spike Jones & His City Slickers

Do The Freddy - The Elm Street Group f/Robert Englund
Punk Polka - The Toons
The Curly Shuffle - Jump 'N The Saddle

Totally Have These, Just Don't Have The Info Correct

The Graveyard Shift (taped ca late 1987)
About the dance that the skeleton crew does, and to make sure you're not cremated upon your death so that you can join them. Solo performer on jaunty piano, kind of a bit rag-esque.

The Red Tango (taped ca early to mid-1988)
"Beware those dirty Latin Commies!" Of course in tango rhythm on a synth. Total affected Spanglish accent.

Tattoo Of Me But Taller (Comic Relief II/1988 Excerpt) - Steven Wright

The Smoke-Off - Shel Silverstein
George Of The Jungle - 'Weird Al' Yankovic
Bedroom Football - Don Watson
99 Dead Baboons - Tim Cavanagh
Blind Date - Wayne Faust
- Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins - Leonard Nimoy (maybe?)
- The Sideboard Song - Chas & Dave
- Redback On The Toilet Seat - Slim Newton

I Wanna Be In The Olympics (taped ca late 1988)
Hick-sounding feller thinks he can do better than the real athletes if they let him in the Games.

Hotchia Cornia (Black Eyes) - Spike Jones & His City Slickers
Timothy - The Buoys
Wildwood Weed - Jim Stafford

Neil Young (taped ca mid 1989)
A dude insults his lady, she lets him have it in the jewels. He moans about his new vocal pitch in song, to the tune of Neil's ???. (Originally this was tagged as Barnes & Barnes, but upon relistening to it recently I have removed that. It lacks the traditional 'yeah'. So perhaps it's from one of them solo, or a very good voice imitation?)

The 2000 Year Old Man - Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks
Pizza Hut Now - The Original Artists
Disney On Ice - The Original Artists
Clothes Of The Dead - The Original Artists
Rock And Roll R.I.P. - Steven Banks

My Boss Is Lazy - Laszlo & Gary
Slick Surfing
Goo Goo Muck - The Cramps
Day And Nitrous - Martin Azevedo
The Brady Bunch - 'Weird Al' Yankovic

Politics, Etc.

I'm going to guess these are 1988-ish, +/- a little each way into 87 or 89 for fringe play?
Colonel North, He Is A Hero
Extolling the virtues of Ollie to the melody of the 'Green Beret' song. Singer sounds rather Neil Diamond-ish.

Ollie
General send-up of North, frenetic backing, using electronic keyboard sounds.

Please, Please, Please
A heartfelt round of begging to get Ronald Reagan back in show business (and out of politics) and maybe even win entertainment awards! Solo performer on acoustic guitar, with some kind of electronic backing track.

The Thing - Phil Harris
Hawaiian War Chant (Ta-Hu-Wa-Hu-Wai) - Spike Jones & His Wacky Wakikians
The Man From Harlem - Cab Calloway
Ollie
Colonel North, He Is A Hero

Good Luck!!! (If help that you can hear is needed, I *did* slurp the ones I still have from the tapes in a basic no-frills manner. Just ask...)

This has become a bigger project than just identifying the songs properly. Now I'm working to reconstruct my early journey in Dementia-listening as I taped, then lost, taped again (and sometimes lost again!) sets of material. Only a few sides are original as-taped the first time.

After poring over the paperwork with detail in mind, some things are starting to come into shape. The data is spotty, but there are definitely some patterns. Right now I can tentatively reconstruct a few tape-sides that once existed. But it's just a beginning.

This combination of my 'Missing List' plus the scans of 'tape song lists' with erasures/pencil divots has shown me that I should have had at least 12 more tapes than I ended up with, due to wiping/taping over! Sadness. Man, what a dummy I was!

But the key to this project is the playlists. Simply put, I need them. Desperately. I will wait if I have to, but I hope it doesn't take too long.

I think the song level of detail is fantastic. It's one of the things I love about this place. Unfortunately, that doesn't help me when either the songs or shows I seek don't have entries.

Case in point: Last night while listening to My Least Favorite Things by Dale Gonyea. Went to look it up. *big buzzer sound* So I have stuff that according to data here or the other place, does not exist. Fabulous.

And top it all off, I'm discovering that my early taping days were so so much worse than I thought. Found a list fully filling both sides of 3 sheets of notebook paper of tracks that were lost for various reasons. That's a lot of stuff! I might never be able to recreate how it all went down. Crap.

Some of the remaining pages are actually filled out. Here's just one.

I have returned with some minor updates! But the fact that only a small bit of data was found is disheartening. Honestly, this shouldn't be taking so long...

It seems to me, that what I really need are the FULL-TXT Live Playlists from 1987-1992, so that I can piece it all together myself. It blows my mind that this information STILL ISN'T ONLINE after all this time. What is holding it back? Is it a data entry thing? *raises hand to volunteer* What will it take to make this happen?

(I know, the "even better" would be actual recordings. I won't hold my breath on that, though the idea makes me quiver...)

/rant over/ *frustrated fangirl goes back to the corner*

Long entries are getting chopped up everywhere. Wayne made a backup after yesterday's fix and will likely have to restore all this from that point.

Arg, the challenge will have to go into a holding pattern until the nastybad scripts are quashed, as they keep eating the bottom half of the blasted post! Repasting only to have it vanish again? Bleah...

OK y'all here's Part 3. Creaky ancient 20 year old political tunes. Now that's a challenge indeed!

I'd always intended this project to be a forum post (for maximum exposure) instead of a blog post, but that magic ability does not seem to be available to me, either now or a month ago when I started this. *sigh*

>>Could be Forever Fluffy - Nancy White, introduced on DrD SYND 07-05-87, #87-27, and on KLSX the next week, 7/12/87.

I'll agree with this one, as the first 2 synd listings of that song also contain 1 each of 2 other things from my 'missing' list. So at least I have a ballpark now of when it came from. 1 more point for you!

Man, y'alll are gonna have to hustle if you wanna catch him in the standings... ;)

-->Freeze-Dried Cat
Not sure if this was a song or a stand-up. Apparently about dead cats?
Could be Forever Fluffy - Nancy White, introduced on DrD SYND 07-05-87, #87-27, and on KLSX the next week, 7/12/87. That 7/5/87 show is the one where I realized doc did not have all the funny records in the world and I had to introduce him to some from my friends, so I started sending him some.

Actually, you can change the subject line. Go to your MadSpace page. The edit link after the subject line gets you to a subject line and text editor.

I added more information, plus the songs for Part 2. Can't change the subject line to reflect that, oh well. Yay, thanks to the above tip, all fixed!

Have fun!!

These came from the KLSX 10/25/1987 show:
With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm - Caryl P. Weiss
The Graveyard Shift - Don Ide
The Monster Rap - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett
The Monster Mash - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett

This one came from the KLSX/SYND 11/01/1987 show:
Nature Trail To Hell - 'Weird Al' Yankovic
(doc was out of town, so KLSX played the national edition of the show, collectors are curious if more was played, as KLSX shows usually had room for 10 to 15 minutes more of music)

These came from the KLSX 11/08/1987 show:
Ten Dead Ones - Drunken Slobs, The
Pink Elephants On Parade - Disney
The Animal Song - King Perry & The Pied Pipers
Pit Bull Song - Barbie & The Big Cheese
Have You Got Any Pot Nancy Reagan? - Bobby Craig

Yes, peicemeal taping seemed to be the routine for many. I started recording whole shows from WKSG-FM in the summer of 1987.

SCORE!!! 5 points for Tim! TYTY, excellent job decimating over half the first round!

Ugh, if political tone kept things off the syndicated shows, it's no wonder I have a nice pile for Part 3.

/me drools...
You... actually... have these shows? *falls dead to the floor*

Because I taped piecemeal, the immediate neighbors on a playlist might not necessarily be what I have them next to. Case in point, the side with Graveyard Shift:

With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm - Caryl P. Weiss
The Graveyard Shift - Don Ide
The Monster Rap - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett
The Monster Mash - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett
Nature Trail To Hell - 'Weird Al' Yankovic
Ten Dead Ones - Drunken Slobs, The
Pink Elephants On Parade - Disney
The Animal Song - King Perry & The Pied Pipers
Pit Bull Song - Barbie & The Big Cheese
Have You Got Any Pot? - Bobby Craig

Is this combination possible from that show, and the one or two following it?

Yes,
also heard on DrD's KLSX show for May 10, 1987 at the start of the show, probably only played on KMET & KLSX due to it's poliitcal nature.
