  • Song Lyrics:
    Rejoice and be glad
    For the springtime has come
We can throw down our shovels
    And go on the bum

    (chorus) Halleluya I'm a bum
    Halleluya bum again
    Halleluya give us a handout
    To revive us again.

    The springtime has come
And I'm just out of jail
    Without any money
    Without any bail

    chorus

    I went to a house
And I rapped on the door
And the lady says bum bum
    You've been here before

    chorus

    I like Jim Hill [1]
He's a good friend of mine
That is why I am hiking
    Down Jim Hill's main line

    chorus

    I went to a house
And I asked for some bread
And the lady says bum bum
    The baker is dead

    chorus

    "Why don't you work
    Like other men do?"
    Now how can I work
When there's no work to do

    chorus

    "Why don't you save
    All the money you earn?"
    If I didn't eat
    I'd have money to burn

    chorus

    I don't like work
    And work don't like me
    And that is the reason
    I am so hungry

    chorus

[1] James J. "Jim" Hill was the president of the Great Northern Railroad, now part of BNSF. He made a point of getting to know many of his workers personally, right down to the older members of the track gangs, and had been known to roll up his sleeves and pitch in alongside them when there was work to be done and not enough personnel to do it. Not surprisingly, he inspired fierce loyalty amongst his employees. Not to be confused with *Joe* Hill, a radical labor leader...

This song was mentioned in the 1956 Science Fiction short story TIME TRANSFER, by Arthur Selling Originally published in Time Transfer and Other Stories.

"The defiant strains of Hallelujah, I’m a Bum and The Big Rock Candy Mountain went fading into the black emptiness around them."
