  • Song Lyrics:
    (telephone rings 4 times)
    (Janet, miked intimately:) Hello.
(Jay, as heard by Janet over telephone:) Hi.
(Janet:) Hi. What are you doing?
(Jay:) I'm supposed to be studying.
(Janet:) So am I. What are you really doing?
(Jay:) Thinking - about last night.
    (Janet:) So am I. (sighs)
(Janet and Jay, simultaneously:) And Friday's so...
    (Janet:) (giggles) Bread and butter.
    (Jay:) Salt and pepper.
    (Janet:) Rock and...
    (Jay:) Roll.
    (Janet:) Rhythm and...
    (Jay:) Blues.
(Janet:) What station are you listening to?
    (Jay:) Guess.
    (Janet:) I'll find it myself.
(Janet's radio - male voice:) Drink Flatto beer, the beer that never goes flat...
(Janet's radio - fades into female voice:) I can't help it if I'm in love with your girlfriend's brother's son...
(Janet's radio - fades into male voice:) Vote for me, Phineas Applebottom, and I promise you...
(Janet's radio fades into Jay's station -- which is playing this song, denoted by a phase-shifted filtered effect in the instrumental track's mono mix)
    (Jay:) That's it.
(Instrumental track fades from effect back to regular mix, but slightly louder and clearer)
    (Jay:) That's compatibility.
(Janet:) Uh-uh. That's not compatibility; that's complete compatitude.

I remembered this from a stack of old 45's my stepbrother gave me decades ago. It features an inane spoken telephone conversation between a teenage boy and a teenage girl, over an instrumental track sort of like surf music but with a more swinging beat; mostly a 12-bar blues pattern, but with a bridge featuring some rather interesting dissonances.

Near the end of the song she asks him what station he's listening to and says she'll find it. As she scans the dial we hear brief portions of a beer commercial, a soap opera and a politician, followed by a phasey filtered effect on the instrumental track (like she found his station which was playing the backing track all along).

Dr. Demento never played it, although it is the sort of thing that he plays. I'll try to upload the audio soon I've uploaded the audio so hopefully one of our DJs can include it on a show for more people to hear. Meanwhile it can be streamed here:

Does anyone else remember it, or know who the musicians are?
