"Nearly 800 South Africans officially became members of a different race group last year, according to figures quoted in Parliament, in terms of the Population Registration Act. They included 518 coloreds who were re-classified as white, 14 whites who became colored, 7 Chinese who became white, 2 whites who became Chinese, 3 Malays who became white, 1 white who became an Indian, 50 Indians who became colored, 57 coloreds who became Indian, 17 Indians who became Malay, 4 coloreds who became Chinese, 1 Malay who became Chinese, 89 blacks who became colored, 5 coloreds who became black."
