Powerhouse is the ubiquitous instrumental tune in classic WB cartoons heard when the cartoonist wants the viewer to think 'industry', 'machines', or 'construction'. It's in dozens of their cartoons. A classic example of its use in cartoons had Elmer Fudd explaining how (capitalist) industrial commerce works during the 'red scare' of the '50s. (Remember that one? Sylvester inherits a pile of cash, Elmer wants him to invest it in 'good companies', and explains why. No, I'm not making this up.)
Warner Bros. bought the rights to it and used it's own orchestra to recreate 'Powerhouse' for it's cartoons. Their versions take a few liberties with the tune. The original tune is quite distinctive. It sounds like a '20s song, but the melody is unmistakable. (Stavro Arrgolus) |
