Another inexplicable TV-related oddity. You can get away with what are now politically incorrect things if the show is foreign or perceived to originate from a culture other than PC pig-controlled America and/or the show in question was made quite a while ago in a time when people didn't 'know better'.
Both of those criteria apply to Python.
But don't take your editor's word for it. Go on- try using a word like "niggerbaiter" in any context other than Monty Python. (Stavro Arrgolus) |
| Terry Gilliam often mentions that the Beatles were great fans of Monty Python and that they told him that Python carried on their spirit as Python was beginning as the Beatles were ending. Each made cameos in the other's projects occasionally. George Harrison appeared on 'Rutland Weekend Television', Pythons appeared in Harrison's video (though they weren't called 'videos' in those days) for 'Crackerbox Palace', and Ringo Starr puts in a quick appearance along with Lulu in the short "It's" sequence at the end of this episode. The panto thing still floors me. Even in something as intentionally irreverent as Python, it's inescapable. It must be quite an ingrained cultural quirk for the country that gave us Motorhead and The Sex Pistols to still have a thing for having half an audience shouting "Oh, no it isn't!" and the other half shout "Oh, yes it is!" every Xmas. Maybe I should JFGI and work it out for myself.
