Original Sputnik series did fall back to Earth. The US Vangaurd satelite, though not operational, was still in orbit at the time of Glenn. It is still in orbit today--they did a good job on that one. I think Telstar was launched after that. Earth orbit was rather empty back then, all they can for communication to Mercury where ground based stations. Not sure what else was up there at the time.

That depends... did he flush? Probably a few dog and monkey corpses (or did we, and the soviets, bring them back down?) plus whatever satelites we left whizzing around spying on each other...

Anybody want to take a guess at how many man-made objects were in orbit when John Glenn was in his Mercury Capsule close to 50 years ago?
