Poor old John Denver. One of the big gags during the time of this album was that you could get a John Denver cassette for 99¢, but blank tapes cost $3. John Denver could therefore have become richer by shutting the hell up. Donny & Marie never had to put up with that kind of crap! By 1980, Denver had had enough of the abuse and somehow, between bouts of binge drinking and doing besotten loop-de-loops in the air in those experimental planes of his (which got him into so much trouble later on), he managed to get a hold of his lawyers and stuck it to Python for this bit. | - Stavro Arrgolus |

In the censored versions of the "Contractual Obligation Album", this track is omitted entirely and its 18 seconds are replaced by an announcement by Terry Jones. He says, "The item which follows has been omitted on legal advice. (long pause) ...Once again, we apologise for that pause in the record which was owing to the, uh, original item being omitted on legal advice. However, I'm pleased to say we can now go on with the record, so here we are with 'Finland, Finland'." (Stavro Arrgolus) |
The infamous omission of 'Farewell To John Denver' in later pressings of the original LP and early CDs was due to Denver's lawyers intercession. Denver somehow objected to Python using 'Annie's Song', changing the lyrics to 'You came on my pillow' and then comedically strangling him. Who knew? (Stavro Arrgolus) |
