The video for this was removed from YouTube, so I took it off this page.

I began a list of what constitutes 'dementia' and indirectly, what should be on the site in my blog - it's the May 25 entry. The idea was to get a reasonable definition together to use for the help page at some point. And I was doing all right until I ran into the race factor...it's all explained there.

Quite a bit is about 'What Would Dr. Demento Play?'. Despite the site's problems with him, the type of songs that are in the archive come from a sense of what Dr. D perceived this genre to be. This was expanded by what was played on TMMS and then expanded more by the influence of the FuMP. And that got expanded by the shows added to TMMA later on...until the point is reached where "you have to draw the line somewhere".

The line I draw is described in the (work in progress) list on my blog - keeping in mind this is Wayne's site and at any point he can decide that his editor is full of sh*t, though that's not exactly a secret.

If you know something's not dementia, don't make a page for it. You can play things on a show and include it in the show's playlist without making a song page for it. Both DJ Particle and David Tanny do this in their shows. The idea is not to fill the archive with 'mundane' song pages and have visitors wondering what this or that song is doing here if this is supposed to be a archive for 'mad music'.

So, if you play them all on your show, Jace, you can then upload them. :D

Not necessarily....I added this one because (a) it's been played on a show and (b) it's strange enough to fit a broader definition of 'novelty' music, even if it's not comedy.

Usually only comedy, satire, and filk (or other songs performed by an artist who is associated with such music) get added without needing a show to be played on. Once a song is played however, the rules loosen a little.

That's just how I've been calling it. Your mileage may vary *shrug*
