Reached #63 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart 6/11/1966 (Tim P. Ryan) |
I distinctly recall this song being 'sung' by nondescript puppets in a silly bit on Captain Kangaroo in the early '70s. (Stavro Arrgolus) |
I seem to vaguely remember this song being played on CAPTAIN KANGAROO during the early '70s. (sav-man) |
She is actually not Lou Christie's sister...that's an urban legend. A fun one, though. (Barbecue Sergeant) |

Song Lyrics: |
I don't like snails, or toads, or frogs, Or strange things living under logs, But, mmm, I love onions. I don't like dancin' with crazy Ted, He's always jumpin' on my head, But, mmm, I love onions.
Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot. Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.
I don't like rain, or snow, or hail, Or Moby Dick, the great white whale, But, mmm, I love onions. I don't like shoes that pinch your toes, Or people who squirt you with a garden hose, But, mmm, I love onions.
Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot. Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot. Yeah!
The onion is a tuberous vegetable and is a member of the genus stinkus delicioso. It was highly prized by the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, and their friends and cousins-a. They cause watering of the eyes and rubifaction of the skin, but it is very, very tasty. (huhuh)
Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot. Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha. Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.
How vewwy, vewwy cwude! (Bill L) |

fiogf49gjkf0d This song was ripped-off by Frito-Lay to launch its new Funyuns onion-ring snacks in 1969. The commercial is on YouTube.
It was also ripped-off at about the same time by Smiles & Chuckles to sell its Turtles chocolates in Canada. This ad campaign ran for several decades, and featured a breathy-voiced blonde in a 1930s-style evening gown, lounging on couches as she savoured the chocolates, as several mascot-type Turtles in formal mourning suits, top-hats & monocles sang & danced around her.
The campaign died when Nestle's acquired the Turtles brand, and redesigned the chocolates as individually-wrapped bite-size candy, suitable for sharing & snacking. Without its former "luxury chocolate indulgence" aura, there was no use for the old campaign.

fiogf49gjkf0d I love this song for its delicate and delicious irreverence.

fiogf49gjkf0d If she is not the sister, than I have been fooled for ? years.
Oh well, I found out a few years ago that it was not Rod Stewart playing the harmonica on My Boy Lollipop by Millie Small.
And Hue Downs was not The Little Green Man (I wuv you).
Susan Christie has a deeper voice than Lou on her song.
