Facts:
  • The Rankin/Bass 'Animagic' specials & puppets were made in Japan by stop-motion pioneer Tadahito Mochinaga (1919-1999). In many of the specials, the puppets were made to resemble the actors who did their voices. In the later ones, Santa bore a resemblance to Mickey Rooney since Rooney voiced Santa in many of these shows. But when the voice actor wasn't a celebrity (and sometimes when they were), the Japanese puppet makers took a few liberties. In "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" (1970), the 'young Santa' puppet looked suspiciously like country singer Glen Campbell, who was quite popular at the time. "Year Without a Santa Claus" is a classic example of this sort of thing going on. The Heat Miser puppet seemed to be inspired by Jackie Gleason and Snow Miser was a dead ringer for Danny Kaye, who must have noticed and voiced a puppet character himself in the Rankin/Bass Easter special, "Here Comes Peter Cottontail".
