Can the wind really make it colder?
Humidity data can fill a big folder
It's low numbers they tout
Leaves the theory in doubt
Like beauty, it's on the beholder

Yes, and they must be dry by now. Why don't you pull them out of the cellophane before they scorch.

May I take your hat and goat?

The body puts out heat, that warms the air around it. When the wind is calm, that air stays close by the body, and helps insulate it from the surrounding colder air.

When the wind blows, that warm air is blown away, so the chilling effect of the air is far more pronounced.

That is what the wind chill index indicates.

Similar thing happens with the heat index. If humidity is low, body sweat evaporates faster, so body heat can dissipate faster. When the humidity is high, sweat does not evaporate as quickly, so the heat effect is more pronounced.

That is what the heat index indicates.

Weather people go on about it because it's one of the few things that can make a forecast more exciting.

In the end, too cold is too cold and you have to stick your head out of the door and say, "Yes, it's too damn cold; I'm not going anywhere today." to actually determine anything - for those few of us with the luxury to make decisions like that.

In January, it only warms up around here so there can be torrential rains to flood my basement and further weaken my house's foundation. It's making a valiant attempt to do this right now and I have to sit here and hope it fails yet again.
