Facts:
  • A parody of New York's infamous Mobro 4000 garbage barge ("gar-barge") journey fiasco of 1987 in the style of Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". (Estonius)
  • Song Lyrics:
The legend lives on from Long Island on down of the barge that they call Flying Dustman
It must wander the earth in search of a berth, and meanwhile we're all staying upwind

The folks in the town put their garbage cans out on the curb for the trashmen to take em
And who was to say that they'd all have to pay for their junk to cruise the Caribbean

They thought they could take it down there to the South, down where folks might not think it's offensive
Carolina was clear, "You can't dump your crap here!", and this barge trip was getting expensive

In Mexico too, they'd have nothing to do with the garbage from Islip, Long Island
And even Belize said, "No garbage here, please!" to the crew of the poor Flying Dustman

The Bahamas and Florida both turned them down, In New Orleans the dumps were all closin
When they stopped for a rest anchored off of Key West, all their cargo just set decomposin

A couple months later they finally gave up when the townsfolk expanded their landfill
And the barge that had roamed came on back to its home, while the barge captain totalled up his bill

The legend lives on from Long Island on down of the barge that they call Flying Dustman
It must wander the earth in search of a berth, and meanwhile we're all staying upwind

Since we're bein' all correct 'n' stuff, it's actually Jon Carter (not John with an h).

In the 80s and 90s, Jon Carter and Dan Bammes had a very popular morning show on Utah radio. Robert Lund worked with them for years, though this song is before his time. (Somewhere I've got a picture of me with Jon & Dan, taken at a surprise birthday party for Robert.)

Jon and Dan are still morning radio personalities in Utah, though not together. Here's an article about them from 2001. It's still accurate for Jon, but Dan is now with KUER, the U. of Utah's public radio station.

I think there should be a correction on the title. According to the DMDB, it's "Ballad Of The Flying Dustman" not Dutchman.
