Phil Harris was a member of Jack Benny's ensemble players. Cast as a hard-drinking playboy musician, he was a perfect foil for Benny and had many of the show's best lines. A spinoff featuring Phil and his real-life wife, film goddes Alice Faye, was another ratings winner. Phil also enjoyed a successful 40-year recording career, which began in 1931 and included "That's What I Lkie About The South" and many numbers originally made famous by Bert Williams, the legendary black musical-comedy star of the early 20th century.
