Check out the 1964 version Sammy Davis Jr. made of Jerry's The Shelter of Your Arms. (Tim P. Ryan) |
Jerry Recorded a song "Rape" for the movie "Doctors from Oh! Copenhagen" released in 1970. Jerry explained the story behind the song: I wasn't working at the studio at the time. I came in and saw the co-owner and my friend Nat behind the counter. he said "How would you like to write a song about a rape?" The studio had a client who needed music to go with a rape scene in their adult movie. I said Sure, I'd love to. I don't care if I even get payed! He got paid $150 for the songs use in the film. It was recorded with Eight pianos, Four were recorded at 1/2 speed (Like chipmunks), Organ and Drums. He recorded a dialog tracks by speeding up his voice for the woman, and slowed down his voice for the male rapist. The movie producers liked the song enough to use instrumental versions thru out the film. I found the Movie Poster at filmposters.com (This website is selling it for $250.00)
here's the poster

I Owe A Lot To Iowa Pot: This song was first played on the KMET Dr Demento Show in 1973, and was an early recording made in July 1973, and was a different performance than the one released on JEP Records -November 1975- with "Who Are You To Tell Me Not To Smoke Marijuana" on the B side. This record was sold in head shops along with his excellent roach clips.

Geoff Cooper of "The Roto Rooter Good Time Christmas Band" fame introduced Jerry to Dr Demento circa 1973. (lestatkatt) |

fiogf49gjkf0d I've been a fan of Napoleon XIV (Jerry Samuels) since my father and uncle and Dr. Demento introduced me to him in the early 70's. I personally think he's a musical genius. I heard he does literally everything from writing to producing to singing, etc... himself. So kudos for continuing to play his music. Just to let you know Marching Off to Bedlam and Split Level Head are my favorites, with The Place Where the Nuts Hunt The Squirrels coming in a close 2nd.

fiogf49gjkf0d I like the picture on the cover.

fiogf49gjkf0d Other than the obvious, I had not heard much of the infamous album that Mr. Samuels had put out under the Napoleon XIV handle. Other than Split Level Head and Marching Off To Bedlam the songs were unknown to me. Now I know why! I listened to a few of those tunes as part of a Yahoo artist station on it's Launch. The Explorer is incredibly bizarre especialy the payoff. And I don't even what talk about that disgusting little ditty about the farm boy. His life maybe pretty straightforward today, but Jerry Samuels was one weird dude in the sixties. Don't get me wrong, I still like the famous song and the other two, but I will pass on the album as a whole. Any comments about the album folks! If you reading this Wayne, really interesting show and maybe you could play Split Level Head.
